It has to be said, Cape Town is one of the coolest spots in the world. Ok, ok, so you’ve heard it all before, but do you really even know why it is undoubtedly one of the best cities in the world?
Let’s start with the landscape. Not only does the city have the spectacular Table Mountain, which has recently been voted one of the New7Wonders of Nature (see page 16), but the Table Mountain National Park, which forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, contains some of most bio-diverse species on the planet (see page 18). Did you know that Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is the first botanical garden to be included in one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites? Alongside this, most of the beaches in the Western Cape have been awarded Blue Flag status and are a magnet for surfers worldwide. And when was the last time you could say to someone that you stood at the point where two oceans meet? Cape Point is captivating and inspiring to say the least...
Then when you’ve finished soaking up the wonderful nature situated so unbelievably close to a bustling city, you’re probably feeling a bit peckish. Cape Town is one of the top culinary destinations in the world, with a wide choice of plush restaurants, wine farms, earth-friendly markets, trendy coffee bars and cafes. More and more these days it seems your BFF is the friendly barista who knows just how to make your perfect cup of coffee, so to help you along the way we checked out some of the best places to grab a top-notch caffeine fix (see pages 6–9). Plus, our cover story is literally the icing on the cake for where to indulge in mouth-watering pastries and treats (pages 2–5).
With Cape Town winning World Design Capital 2014, there will be much more we can expect to see in terms of cutting-edge design and trend playing a significant role in the functionality of a young but exceptionally gifted city. And if it’s trend you’re after, then a wander down Bree Street is sure to satisfy every aspect of fashion, food and fads (see pages 10–11). There’s plently to explore and hours to while away meandering around Cape Town, in fact it’s so good that we decided to split the interesting stuff about the city into two parts, so keep a look out for Part Two to follow this issue. In the meantime, step out and enjoy your city, which was nominated best city destination in the world (Travellers’ Choice 2011) – so make the most of it!
