Uber is an app designed by a multi-national transportation network company. The app connects you to hired drivers who will pick you up and drop you off at your desired location for a fee. Once you’ve signed up with your credit or debit card, your ride is cashless, cardless and paperless.
There are eight of us in the car; myself, five Projects Abroad volunteers from the human rights office, our coordinator and our driver. As we drive through the gates of Bonnytoun we are met with high walls, barbed wire fences and uniformed officers, and I begin to feel slightly nervous at my decision to visit this boys’ juvenile detention centre.
As my time winds down to these last few days, the separation between my house back in Tennessee and my home here in Cape Town doesn’t seem so far away. I have such mixed feelings about leaving this place and going back to everything familiar. I have a new familiar now, and a reformed idea of normal – I can’t un-remember these things. But, I cannot stop my mind from returning to thoughts of the beginning, and how those initial thoughts have changed in undulating motions since I’ve been here – washing away preconceptions, bringing new perspectives each time.
The AR Wear is also said to ‘offer some peace of mind in situations that cause feelings of apprehension, such as going out on a blind date, going on an evening run, clubbing, travelling in unfamiliar countries, and any other activity that might make one anxious about the possibility of an assault.’ So I should basically wear them all the time, since the danger of sexual assault is always looming around the corner. This seems extra relevant for me while volunteering in an ‘unfamiliar country’, so I think I’ll buy a pair of these on the spot.
Volunteer, Melike Sevim organised a sports day for 50 kids from the township of Capricorn. The event was held in Zandvlei, Muizenberg, a lovely green area perfect for energetic kids and volunteers. The purpose of the sports day was to introduce the kids to different sporting codes and sporting activities, thus encouraging extramural play outside of the drug and criminal environment they are accustomed to in the townships.
Everybody knows how difficult it can be to find a job nowadays, especially if you are young and without any work experience. The internet is the fastest way to search for job opportunities however, sometimes the reality is that these advertisements are nothing more than fake job opportunities. In other words – a scam!
Sunrise Special Care Centre also has classes for children and young adults who are not able to speak and most of them are unfortunately wheelchair bound, whilst another class accommodates children who suffer from severe intellectual disabilities. Many of the children suffer from physical disabilities like scoliosis or paralysis.
In Cape Town, homeless people are numerous and their presence is prominent. You can find them at traffic lights begging for money, outside a McDonalds imploring you to buy them a meal because they have not eaten for days or loitering in front of your favourite bar, waiting to pounce on the next intoxicated person. The daily routine of street people is often too insignificant for society to even give it a second thought. Intrigued by the presumably monotonous lives of these supposedly second-rate citizens, I decided to see what a day in the lives of the homeless is really like.
She misses her bed the most. It did not survive the fire. Nothing did. Not even the family cat. When Jessica Mtomba (affectionately known as ‘Aunty Masie’), the family’s great-grandmother tells her story, the listener can almost feel the heat and smell the stink of melted plastic, as if they had been there themselves.
For my first trip to Asia, I went to India and Nepal with a group of students to discover what makes these two countries special. India is well-known for the Taj Mahal and is one of the richest countries in Asia, while Nepal is well-known for Mount Everest, but is a modest country. The widespread cultural elements of Buddhism in India and Nepal coupled with the matchless cities and vast landscapes made for an epic adventure. Here’s what happened.
